We received Seth's first letter Friday morning as we were on top of Pike's Peak in Colorado. Yes, we had two high points to our week at once.

He hasn't learned how to upload pictures using the MTC's equipment yet so I will need to come up with my own.

Here is his photo that will be in the missionary display case in our chapel while he serves.

It is tradition that the missionary selects a favorite scripture to be displayed with his/her photo. Seth chose portions of the hymn "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief" to be displayed.  Here is a portion of what he selected.

My friendship's utmost zeal to try, He asked if I for him would die.
The flesh was weak; my blood ran chill,  But my free spirit cried, "I will!"
Then in a moment to my view the stranger started from disguise.
The tokens in his hands I knew; the Savior stood before mine eyes.
He spake, and my poor name he named, "Of me thou hast not been ashamed.
These deeds shall thy memorial be; Fear not, thou didst them unto me."

Here are highlights from his letter.
  • He flew with about 40 missionaries who were starting together at the MTC, from SLC.
  • The first night was hardest and was exacerbated by many dogs barking and music playing outside.
  • His companion "is Elder Zimmerman. He's pretty energetic, and quite a bit shorter than me."
  • They taught a real investigator. "He came back and thanked us pretty deeply for our concern for him."
  • He and his companion received a leadership assignment. "It's a little bit hard to counsel some of the district leaders when they have been in the CCM (the Mexico equivalent of the MTC) longer than you have."
  • "The meals are always plentiful and I try to eat healthy."
  • "It's actually a little uncomfortable using English now, as I can communicate better in Spanish. I can pretty much understand everybody now, even the Maestros (teachers) who speak so fast they singe your eyebrows."
  • "I received comfort and revelation [Friday night] that pretty much eliminated my home sickness... I prayed and declared to our Heavenly Father that I know that through faith, diligence, and offerings, I can master this language by six weeks, and I felt the confirmation that I would."
  • Here is something that would be a source of anxiety to all of us, particularly if we were to speak in a new language. " For sacrament meeting we all prepare talks and then we are called upon right after the sacrament to speak. This week was on the commandments but I didn't get chosen."
  • Here is the testimony he shared. "Yo se que este Evangelio es el Evangelio Restaurado y Dios nos ama. Con fe, todas las cosas son posible." (I know this Gospel is the Restored Gospel and God loves us. With faith, all things are possible.)

It has been a long time since Kevin finished his mission so I am having to relearn this blogging tool. As you can tell from this picture, I need to learn how to take a good selfie.

Seth is now in the Mexico City MTC. I miss him.

Don't let this post discourage you from returning often. I will get better.
